Character Info

Character's Name: Akira Kurusu | Protagonist (note: "Akira Kurusu" was the name used for him in the manga; upcoming canon additions are using Ren Amamiya instead, and if needed I can change this (Persona is difficult with canon naming lol))
Character's Canon: Persona 5
Character's Age: 17
Canon Point: Post December 18th, pre December 24th (after Shido's Palace but before the final boss)
Background/History: Here at the Persona Wiki.

Strengths:

  • Rebellious Spirit: Though seemingly quiet and well-mannered in public, Akira has a very strong inner spirit that rebels against the ills of society. He has contempt for those who use their power to abuse others and those who would try to force him into line. Instead, he trusts his own heart and his own sense of justice, regardless of potential backlash. However, he does not rebel against society for nothing; he's influenced by a very strong, personal moral code, which pushes him to fight to help others rather than for his own gain; his Persona first awakens because he is trying to save a boy he just met. Akira sees himself as just someone who does the right thing, rather than a revolutionary, but it's clear that this attitude has an impact on those around him, earning him respect, and enemies.

  • A Good Listener: Akira is always ready to listen to someone's problems, from his best friends to complete strangers. He's good at connecting with others, and making them feel safe to talk to him, able to get personal details out of people soon after meeting them. He's perceptive when it comes to others, and can see when things are bothering them, and he's a little nosy about getting to the bottom of a problem. He does this because he wants to help, and sometimes all someone needs is to be able to talk it out. Or sometimes, he can go and do something about it himself.
Akira even works in a bar where his primary job is listening to the woes and triumphs of the patrons, putting his empathetic listening skills to good use.

  • A Leader: Akira falls into the leadership role among the Phantom Thieves naturally, though the members at the time all agree to it. Akira's strong moral code and penchant for developing deep bonds with others inspires people to follow him, even into sometimes dangerous situations. However, Akira does not abuse his power over others, and takes responsibility for the things the Phantom Thieves get into. When it is clear that one of them will be arrested, he naturally takes the fall, and does everything in his power to keep his teammates safe. He listens to different viewpoints before coming to a decision, and tries to keep the Phantom Thieves on the right path, both one that will achieve their goals and satisfy them personally. Though he often teases his teammates and can be a bit of a goof at times, he cares deeply for them and takes his role very seriously.

Weaknesses:

  • Reckless: When it comes to himself, Akira doesn't always consider the consequences of his actions before taking them. His moral code pushes him to help people, and if that means getting arrested for assault, or refusing to reveal the identities of his allies and getting tortured, or even trying to befriend his attempted murderer, Akira is willing to do it. These risks usually work out for him in canon, but who's to say they always will? Akira's disregard for his own safety and the dangers he's getting himself into will surely catch up with him one day.

  • Closed Off: Though Akira is a good listener when it comes to other people's problems, he's not so good at sharing about himself. Akira will even actively lie, or hide the truth from others, if he thinks it will make them feel better and not worry about him. Akira isn't one to ask for help when he needs it, and instead tries to handle things on his own. Though he would never keep his friends and allies in the dark on things related to the Phantom Thieves, there are many things about himself he tries to keep secret until they're forced to come out.

  • Tempted By Fame: Even those with the strongest moral code can have failings. Though Akira is primarily motivated by the desire to help others, he can't deny that he enjoys the feeling of acknowledgement he feels as the Phantom Thieves gain popularity, and the disappointment when the public begins to turn against them. Akira is not from the canonpoint when this happens, but it is even possible for him to make a deal with a god, turning back time and allowing the Phantom Thieves to be a powerful, well-known and beloved band of vigilantes, and it becomes clear the desire for fame and power has consumed him. Though this Akira has not made any such decisions yet, his desire for acknowledgement is strong, and he could be tempted to turn away from his own justice for fame instead.

Powers/Abilities: Akira is a Persona user, meaning he can summon powerful creatures called Persona from within his soul to fight for him. These Persona can use both magical attacks and physical attacks, as well as heal others and grant various buffs (or de-buffs). More than that, Akira is a wildcard, or a Trickster, which gives him the ability to summon many different Persona. At his current canonpoint, Akira is allowed to carry 12 Persona, but in the interest of fairness (and for my own sanity), I've pared this list down to 9, one for each of the Arcana represented by his teammates (himself included). I've listed them with their movesets below.

  • Arsene
    • Eiha: light curse attack spell

    • Cleave: light physical attack

    • Sukunda: makes an enemy less agile

    • Dream Needle: physical attack that can put an enemy to sleep

    • Matarunda: makes enemies weaker

    • Makara Break: removes magic-repellant shields from foes

    • Agidyne: heavy fire damage to a single target

  • Sarasvati
    • Me Patra: cures Dizzy/Forget/Sleep/Hunger

    • Mediarama: cures moderate wounds of all allies

    • Tentarafoo: chance to confuse all foes

    • Null Sleep: Akira can't be put to sleep while wielding Sarasvati

    • Matarunda: makes enemies weaker

    • Diarahan: cures large wounds on one ally

  • Dakini
    • Bad Beat: physical damage to multiple foes, has a chance to cause despair in an enemy

    • Giant Slice: physical damage to one foe

    • Rising Slash: heavy physical damage to one foe

    • High Counter: makes Akira better at countering physical attacks while wielding Dakini

    • Deathbound: physical damage to multiple enemies

    • Charge: makes an ally temporarily much stronger

  • Oberon
    • Brain Jack: chance to brainwash multiple foes

    • Heat Wave: heavy physical damage to multiple enemies

    • Ziodyne: heavy electric damage to one foe

  • Cerberus
    • Agidyne: heavy fire damage to one foe

    • Megaton Raid: heavy physical damage to one foe

    • High Counter: makes Akira better at countering physical attacks while wielding Cerberus

    • Enduring Soul: allows Akira to survive one fatal blow

  • Koropokkuru
    • Makajama: chance to cause a foe to temporarily forget a skill

    • Bufu: light ice damage to a foe

    • Dodge Ice: Akira is better at dodging ice magic while wielding Koropokkuru

    • Rakunda: makes enemies worse at defense

    • Fire Wall: protects an ally from fire magic

    • Mabufu: light ice damage to multiple foes

  • Dominion
    • Nocturnal Flash: chance to cause foes to become dizzy

    • Hamaon: chance to instantly kill an enemy

    • Kougaon: heavy bless damage to a foe

    • Makougaon: heavy bless damage to all foes

    • Mahamon: chance to instantly kill multiple enemies

Akira can't use all of these abilities at once; he has to actively switch between Persona, and then he can only use the skills available to them. Switching between Persona has a short cool down period before Akira can do it again. Additionally, using his Persona causes Akira to grow tired over time, and eventually he will become too exhausted to continue fighting with them.

I'm willing to change any of these if needed!

In addition to Akira's Persona, being a Trickster also gives him the power of the Third Eye, which gives him enhanced perception. It gives him the following abilities:

  • The ability to see if a person or creature is relatively strong or weak compared to himself.

  • The ability to see places he could climb on or crawl into.

  • The ability to see in the dark (short range, about a 5-10 foot radius around him.

  • The ability to see if something has treasure in it (for the purposes of RP, it shows him if there is something inside a container, like a box). It does not show him the actual contents, however.

Other Noteworthy Traits:
  • Akira can make lockpicks and pick locks.

  • He can make a mean cup of coffee, and also knows how to make curry.

  • He knows a little about flower arranging and bartending thanks to part-time jobs.

  • Knows maybe a little too much about guns, seeing as he comes from modern Japan.

Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
On him: his clothes (hobo hoodie + jeans for incognito "everyone thinks I'm dead" mode), his phone, his weapons (two knives and a model pistol), his Metaverse outfit (changes into it automatically when summoning Persona).
Special inventory: the copy of Shido's legislature pin

Color: Red. Red is the image color for Persona 5 (as opposed to blue for P3 and yellow for P4), it's a large part of Joker's aesthetic, and red is a fiery color for a rebellious spirit.

Sample:
1. TDM thread with Kaoru
2. TDM top level

World Aspect: The Velvet Room is a supernatural place where people can go, and summon Persona of their own. Normally, only wildcards are allowed inside (though this isn't always true; everyone was allowed in in the first Persona game). Akira's version of the Velvet Room looks like a prison because he feels trapped by society, but all Velvet Rooms appear in a way that reflects how the person who has entered feels about their world and their place in it. Not sure how this could be used, other than to give other people the opportunity to get personas, or in-game persona users to get new ones, but it's a thought (and other people beat me to Palaces already haha).
